QUAD-A ACADEMY: FIRST AUDIO ENGINEERING CLASS OF 2022

FEBRUARY 2022

Quad-A's academy programme launched on February 7, 2022, bringing together students, facilitators and partner organisations to meet a gap the studio had been living with for years: “The biggest hurdle we faced? The lack of audio technicians qualified to handle the ever-increasing projects that needed to be handled in a short time span.”

Selection began November 26, and ten aspiring audio engineers were chosen for a six-month training programme under experienced professionals, with the curriculum built around sound design and engineering. Partner organisations included Afrique Creative, Africalia, AFD, Dolby, Motiv and The Innovation Village.

Andrew Ominipele, a student from Nigeria, described the pull of the opportunity: “I was very happy to learn about the opportunity… I believed it was a life changing opportunity. I packed my bags and followed my dream.”

Over six months, learners moved through internship experience, mentorship and production preparation, including sessions on audio metering led by Professor Gerrhard Roux of Stellenbosch University.

The Future

As multimedia content keeps expanding across the region, skilled audio engineers become harder to do without. Many African sound professionals still lack access to formal training and reference-quality equipment, which quietly caps the impact of otherwise strong productions. This class was built to change that math, one graduate at a time.
