Foley sounds are what make an audio-visual experience feel seamless and real. Foley artists create and record sound effects that mimic real-world movement, footsteps, clothing, objects, then sync them precisely to picture. In practice, that work sorts into three main categories.
- FOOTSTEPS: the most common Foley element, grounding the audience in the scene and giving each character physical presence. Artists work across concrete, wood and gravel, and switch footwear to give every character a distinct step.
- PROPS: the objects characters handle in a scene, a metal chain standing in for a jail cell door, built to enhance the audio without ever calling attention to itself.
- CLOTH MOVEMENT: leather, denim and silk each move differently, and Foley artists scrunch, rub and rustle different fabrics to add texture and depth to a character's motion.
Sorted this way, a Foley artist builds a soundscape that feels authentic rather than assembled, and that's the whole point.
