Looking to start a career in audio engineering? The engineers who make it tend to share a small set of qualities in common.
- CREATIVITY: the work runs on imagination and conceptual thinking. Being genuinely artistic, and able to find the most inventive solution while still hitting a client's brief and deadline, is table stakes.
- COMMUNICATION: listening actively and understanding a client's vision matters as much as any technical skill. A vision-casting meeting before production starts, prompt replies to calls and emails, and real teamwork with everyone else on the session all make the work easier and the result better.
- TENACITY: the outcome isn't always what the client expected, and that means redoing the work. Staying willing to keep learning, and giving every project full effort the first time, avoids unnecessary revisions and an unhappy client.
- ORGANISATION: meeting deadlines means planning the resources and time a project actually needs, and communicating early if something's slipping rather than after the fact. A client who feels taken care of stays loyal. A clean, spacious studio helps too, or hire someone to manage the logistics so you don't have to.
- POSITIVE ENERGY: staying productive and moving forward under pressure is its own skill. A studio should be a safe room to push work to its limit without fear of criticism, and that starts with keeping the environment positive.
There's more to the craft than five traits, but these are the ones that show up again and again in the engineers who build lasting careers.
